Oh wait, they did! Here’s part of an abstract from Nature Climate Change, from February of this year (emphasis mine):

Struck by many intense hurricanes in recorded history and prehistory, NYC is highly vulnerable to storm surges. We show that the change of storm climatology will probably increase the surge risk for NYC; results based on two GCMs show the distribution of surge levels shifting to higher values by a magnitude comparable to the projected sea-level rise (SLR). The combined effects of storm climatology change and a 1 m SLR may cause the present NYC 100-yr surge flooding to occur every 3–20 yr and the present 500-yr flooding to occur every 25–240 yr by the end of the century.

If you listened carefully in the calm, as the eye of Sandy passed overhead, I’m told you could hear the faint sound of a fiddle being played while a flooded, darkened city burned.

I wouldn’t trust Romney as far as I can throw him.

ABC:

An Indiana man has auctioned off space on the side of his head, where he tattooed Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign “R” logo in a 5-by-2-inch spot for a bid of $15, 000.

Eric Hartsburg posted the eBay listing in August, and told ABC News that he was paid $15,000 by a Republican eBay user, who preferred to remain anonymous,  to get the Romney logo permanently inked on the side of his head. Hartsburg, who is an Indiana native, told ABC News that he agreed because the tattoo was something that he could live with.

“I am a registered Republican and a Romney supporter,” Hartsburg said. “I didn’t mind getting this tattoo because it is something that I could live with and it’s something that I believe in.” […]

Hartsburg says that the whole thing was done as a gag but now he believes his new tat has a purpose. He says he is trying to “educate people on his beliefs.”

“In the beginning it was done for gags and publicity, but now I see it as a way to encourage young people to vote.” He continued, “We have so many rights that we don’t utilize and young people need to exercise that right.”

The 30-year-old professional wrestler says that he wants his tattoo to send a message to young people. “I want young people to know that it’s O.K. to be young, and it’s O.K. to be a Republican.”

Hey, kids, it is more than OK to be young and Republican. If you are young and engaged with the world and politically involved, regardless of what party you support, that puts you ahead of even many adults when it comes to making your way through this life. And good for you! But do not under any circumstances get the Romney “R” tattooed on your goddamn face. Ever.

As Hurricane Sandy heads toward land on the East Coast, the storm and its aftermath could lend an interesting twist to the upcoming general election–call it the “October surprise”–as some power outages could last into Election Day.

Hurricane Sandy’s track is projected to directly affect two swing states in the election—Pennsylvania and Virginia—with Ohio also in the storm’s path inward.

The storm will arrive about a week before Election Day, and widespread, long-term power outages are a possibility, based on recent trends and the severity of the storm.

This just got interesting.

Polls are indicating that, due to early voting, Obama has a slight lead over Romney

And Romney is hedging his bets that winning Ohio will win him the presidency as he’s investing heavily in the state with advertising and campaigning. This storm will play precarious odds in determining if people will get to cast their vote for either candidate.

So, in essence, Sandy, an act of God if you want to call it that, may very well help determine the outcome of who will be in the White House the next 4 years.

Road to deadlock: Prospect of a U.S. presidential tie now ‘startlingly real’
As election day nears in the United States, the race is coming down to nine toss-up states. And, according to CNN, the “prospect is startlingly real” that it may end in a tie — President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney may both win 269 Electoral College, if current trends continue. Is there a U.S. election blowout on the way? Obama headed for a decisive victory over Mitt Romney, Ipsos projects
President Barack Obama pulled slightly ahead of Republican Mitt Romney in a Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll on Tuesday, but the race remained essentially tied with two weeks to go until the November 6 election.

Obama led Romney among likely voters by a statistically insignificant margin of 1 percentage point, 47% to 46%. The four-day online tracking poll includes some responses taken after the two candidates’ final televised debate, but the full impact will not register for several days.

Obama maintains a larger advantage in the state-by-state battle that will determine the outcome of the election. Ipsos projects that Obama holds an edge in the most hotly contested states, including Florida, Virginia and Ohio, and is likely to win by a relatively comfortable margin of 332 electoral votes to 206 electoral votes.
