EVE 2020

Their future is clear, electrics are here to stay.

Hybrids will take charge.

I wrote the words above 10 years ago when I was relatively new to the world of design and was so enthralled with the promise of alternative energy merging with automotive technology that much of my first online portfolio was dedicated to this mindset, almost obsessively so.

The Prius had yet to become the successful manifestation it is today but little did I know how much of an impact hybrids would have.

In the time that has passed since 2002 I can’t help but to think the future is catching up with everything I had only imagined.

That, to me, is a beautiful thing to have realized. But now I guess I have to do some more forward-thinking. Who knows what things will be like 10 or even 5 years from today!

Blu3 Dragonflies

My first 3D rendering I’ve done in ages that wasn’t a bunch of rectilinear forms.

I miss working with 3D software but was reminded why it’s so challenging.

I love dragonflies so it was good times. ^_^

“Moleskinerie Logo Design Competition Submissions”
These are some of my concepts for a recent logo design competition sponsored by Designboom and Moleskin.
I tried to express the mobility and connection with nature of the Moleskin product line.

J2 Graffiti Valentine

So, last year, my #1 redhead would bug me to make her a graffiti sketch similar to what I’ve been doing for my Tumblr name.

I just finished this last night but was kind of thinking I could also add some poem to the empty white space. Or I could just leave it as is…if I get inspired to write her something I can always add it later.

Hope everyone else has a great day today too!

“Haiti House”
It was only 2 years ago that Haiti was sacked by an earthquake.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/11/haiti-earthquake-relief-help_n_1197666.html?ref=impact&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009
I submitted these images as part of a Emergency Shelter 1-hour design competition sponsored by Core77.com shortly after the earthquake.
The premise was that these shelters could be built with locally sourced materials. I also assumed that some components could be pre-manufactured and shipped to hazard sites to help with assembly of the shelters.
I focused more on how the shelters would resist further damage from aftershocks so I thought a foundation with wheels like an office chair that also had some shock absorbing attributes would help dissipate the vertical and lateral movements of the ground.
Additionally, other hazards from flooding (which did as much damage) posed a significant threat as well so my shelters would also have the ability to float and could be tethered to the ground via a flexible connection like a rope or chain. “Haiti House”

“Blu3 RSX - Tags”
I wanted to explore some iterations of my username as a quick graffiti tag.
I used several different marker types, colors, and sizes just to get a feel of what my hand and brain could express in sync.
I liked all of the markers I used but maybe because it was most familiar, I really had a preference for my Prismacolor for its broad and narrow chisel point, texture (at least on paper), and controllable nature to vary the stroke.
My concepts started very naturally much like a signature and a bit Disney-esque.
But I wanted to really capture some essence of design by incorporating other graffiti elements, namely arrows (hey, I’m a Sagittarius).
I hit on what I was looking for in the red sketch where the ‘3’ and the ‘R’ graphically formed two halves of an arrow which I refined in the predominant blue sketch at the bottom.
But, man, a couple of my heavy-duty markers were very, um, fragrant and had me delightfully lightheaded after a couple hours working in my office with the door closed. My sketchbook still reeks.
